A cable car takes visitors up 3600 meters and you can walk to the peak and crater with prior permission available from Santa Cruz. On a clear day you have magnificent views over the Atlantic and the other six islands that form the Canarian Archipeligo.
The crater has a circumference of 80KM and by prior arrangement you can enter the crater by cross country car then on foot until you arrive at the volcanically still active parts. Christopher Columbus witnessed the last major eruption in 1492 from the neighbouring island of La Gomera from where he set out to discover America.
Extended on from Teide forming the crest of the Island is the Canadas mountain range, where the lavas have settled to provide fantastic rock formations, caves and natural viewing points. Along these peaks is the Tenerife observatory and astrological station famed for its space observation and research.
